I read a book a few years ago called, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*CK”. It’s primary premise is to not worry (or care) about things that are not in your control. I was thinking of trying to get a quote from it, but I realized last night that it is pretty much the same idea as the Serenity Prayer from AA meetings. Serenity is basically the opposite of anxiety, and all kinds of addictions are coping mechanisms for dealing with worry and anxiety. The serenity prayer helps us to let go of things we have no control over, but to attack with courage those things we can influence for good. This is the entire prayer:

    God, grant me the Serenity
To accept the things I cannot change…
Courage to change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His will.
That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
    Amen.

I have a really annoying salesman that periodically calls me. He tried to get me to hire an engineer last year. He told me this engineer was really great and “had what a lot of engineers seem to lack – self confidence”. I thought to myself, “this engineer sounded terrible.” I like engineers with a lot of self doubt and uncertainty. I like engineers who are always worried they might be making a mistake.

Some confidence is important, and it is important not to be intimidated by people you meet and work with. However, our culture has blown things out of proportion with self-promotion and “fake it till you make it”. Confidence without competence is not valuable. The following quote is from a Harvard Business Journal article called “The Perils of Self Promotion.”

“Reams of psychological studies show that being perceived as modest is associated with a wide range of positive outcomes. The message is clear: People do not value confidence unless it is accompanied by competence—and even when it is, they prefer to see as little confidence surplus as possible.”

That’s certainly the stance that Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a psychologist, university lecturer, and (full disclosure) HBR author, takes in his new book, Confidence: Overcoming Low Self-Esteem, Insecurity, and Self-Doubt, which persuasively argues that we’ve taken our culture of self-assurance and self-promotion too far. He cites a longitudinal survey of U.S. college students in which the proportion describing themselves as “an important person” spiked from 12% in the 1950s to 80% in the 1980s; further along the self-involvement spectrum, rates of narcissism jumped from 15% in 1982 to 25% in 2006.

Chamorro-Premuzic frets about the impact on our skill-building abilities, because his review of the research on confidence (and competence) shows that it’s actually low self-esteem—not a healthy ego—that propels us to success. After all, he writes, “wanting to be good at something is incompatible with thinking you are good at something.” He advises the ambitious “not to have high confidence, but to have high competence.” Don’t “fake it till you make it” or strive to promote yourself. Instead, work hard. Work well. Be likable.

Each day I can make the world a little bit better or a little bit worse. When you are treated poorly the temptation is there to give back what you receive. However you can alternatively rise and be the bigger person.

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor in around 160 A.D. He was the father of Commodus from the Gladiator movie, and unfortunately the apple fell far from the tree. Aurelius wrote a book called “Meditations” which was a diary of sorts. It ended up being copied and published, and we still have it today. Here’s a quote from it:

“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own – not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.”

Man maintains Fitness for reasons outside of himself

A man who has turned Pro doesn’t exercise to get good at exercising. His goal is Preparedness, a far broader and deeper objective than just feeling strong and looking good on the beach (although there is nothing wrong with either of those two things). The HIM stays in strict physical training to get a crown that will last forever. Thus, there is an eternal purpose in what he does. He is building a kingdom of Preparedness within which he intends other people to safely dwell. He knows that fatigue makes cowards of us all.

The goal of the King is to constantly increase 3S2T: Speed, Strength, Stamina, Toughness (physical) and Toughness (mental). These are the aspects of a HIM’s physical kingdom that enable him to do the things he must do to be a Leader. It’s not really very complicated, how can a man be much of Leader if he gets smoked pulling his family’s luggage off the baggage carousel and carrying it to the minivan? What will a son learn from a father who can’t play catch with him in the backyard for more than five minutes without having to sit down?

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Matthew 7:13-14.

    • From the Q – Source 1.1:

Discretion is a cage with velvet bars

Each morning, we all face the decision whether to take the Red Pill or the Blue Bill. The first is hard-true and the second easy-false. The Red forces a man to hike up the rocky path toward the EQV, while the Blue lets him mosey down the smooth trail to Mascot-life and chronic Sad Clown Syndrome.
A man’s first Red Pill is the toughest to swallow because it causes Disruption to the status quo in the form of Movement. And while it doesn’t get easier, it does get better. The second, third and thousandth Red Pill is just as tough to swallow as the first, but that initial Movement gives birth to Acceleration which leads to Momentum and Momentum ultimately leads to joy.

Whether it’s his Fitness, Fellowship or Faith, the rocky path to the EQV keeps getting steeper the higher the HIM gets on it. As he becomes more fit, every Workout finds him pushing a little bit harder and faster to improve. As his relationships deepen, he grows into the increasing weight of people’s reliance upon his strength. As his understanding of the Super Unknown becomes clearer, he dives more deeply into his relationship with the SkyQ. The HIM knows that there are no plateaus in the pursuit of proper personal alignment. Every day he is either getting more Right or less.

The HIM depends upon his Guardrails to continue Accelerating. The faster his Movement, the stronger they need to be. To get ready for the expected and be ready for the unexpected, the HIM gradually improves his Guardrails by constructing Routines that allow for increasing action with decreasing thought. Because it is comprised of positive Habits , a Routine does not require an active choice to perform. Over time, it becomes ingrained into the HIM’s daily rhythm such that it would require his active choice not to perform.

The HIM constructs his Routines through the process of Bricklaying. Each individual Brick is a singular positive Habit that is light enough for him to carry and place together with other Bricks. Conjoined, the Bricks become a Routine that form and build his Guardrails. Once a Brick is set, it provides a place to lay the next Brick. Because it is set, the HIM has effectively deprived himself of the discretion to remove it. This enables him to focus his full energy on performing his Routines because he doesn’t have to waste energy thinking about it. Like a soldier, he is freed to action through deprivation of discretion.

While discretion may be the freedom to decide what to do in a given situation, for a man without Guardrails discretion is a cage with velvet bars–it will lead him to take the Blue Pill. Through military training, the soldier learns that there is nothing liberating in having to decide what to do in every situation. True freedom is the pre-determined what that allows full focus on the how.

The stronger the Guardrails, the faster you can drive.

We talked about having a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset in your life. In F3 we call that You vs. You. It is better to grow and try new things in your life than to only do activities you can do successfully.

The woman that founded “Spanx” was asked how she became so successful. She related that her father use to ask the kids in her family, “what did you fail at this week?”. He was disappointed if they didn’t have an answer. If you are not failing at something, you are not growing and becoming the best version of you.
