    Stumbling blocks

The church puts stumbling blocks in people’s way to faith and binds heavy burdens on people that makes coming to faith difficult and often, like pharisees, we don’t lift a finger to help them. I believe an example is young earth creationism which is laughably untenable for many in academia, but the church often treats it as a foundational to Biblical truth. This makes it virtually impossible for many educated people to take the Bible seriously. It is a heavy burden that they cannot bear. We should be willing to “lift a finger” to reassess our assumptions to make sure our truth claims are valid.

This is of course true outside the church and in the divisive atmosphere of the broader culture. Listening, empathizing, and reassessing our truth claims would go a long way toward easing the political tension.

    Tim Keller died this week.

He was the most important voice in my denomination. I didn’t read him much, but enough to know that I respected him and valued his approach to ministry. He was able to preach the gospel with conviction, but in a way that was relevant to and respectful of secular culture.

According to one obit he had two foundational principals. One was that Christianity should not be aligned with a political party. The other was that liberal secularism should be critiqued as a religion just like any other. He did so without dogmatism or divisiveness.

    May his tribe increase,

thinking about business and leaving your first (or foremost) loves

Devoting time to the things that matter can seem tedious, especially after years of doing them. It is also easy to get off the mark, thinking you are devoting time to things that matter, but actually moving off into related but less vital things.

Like reading the Word for knowledge or for the sake of task completion but losing the relational aspect of it. Or spending “time” with your M or 2.0s, but having that time be more about pursuing hobbies than actually deepening your relationship.

Revolution emphasized the importance of spiritual growth in relationship with other people. All other spiritual growth may be illusory.

    It’s about the process

It is easy to get frustrated when you are doing the “right things” and aren’t getting the results you want.

My M has been feeling that way about home school lately.

It is hard for us to work hard toward our goals or toward particular outcomes and not see the results we want. But often with the most important things the results aren’t really up to us. All we can do is do our best at any given time and place and leave the rest up to God.

The oldest song with musical notation is more than 2000 years old. Here are the lyrics.

    “While you live, shine

    have no grief at all

life exists only for a short while

    and Time demands his due.”

As men roughly in the “middle” of life we are generally building things in a long term way. We spend most of our time, energy, and thought toward that end. Building our business, career, family, toward retirement, etc.

But does our “building” become obsessive and cause us to forget the brevity of life and lose sight of even more important things

    Your life is a vapor…

    Do not worry about tomorrow…

How would you live your life differently if you knew exactly how much time you had left?

Life is short. Death is coming. While you live, shine!

Considered ways that our “love” falls short. We often elevate a mother’s love to the status of being the ideal or highest form of human love. I was reading Agatha Christie recently and she played with the idea that it perhaps isn’t as perfect as we might wish. At one point Poirot says “mothers are particularly ruthless when their children are in danger.”

Reminded me of a biblical perspective on love and how we can/should try to love our 2.0s and M in that way.

Romans 15:2 Each of us should please his neighbor for his good.

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

True love on earth is rare. The things we call love are usually pale imitations of true selfless love.

Considered two points my pastor made last Sunday related to Christmas. One is that salvation is found in a person, not in a worldview, political system, ideology, etc. We should be careful not to put our hope in utopian “solutions.” Second is that the Messiah really did set the Jewish people free from the Romans, just not in the ways they expected. They were delivered from their fear of death (first century martyrs embraced death with little concern for Roman abuse) and the salvation was transcultural meaning that it puts the Jewish people and the Romans in the same boat, which would eventually lead Rome to embrace Christianity.

Secondly just expressed gratitude for our AO continuing through the harsh winter. Often is my only form of exercise and has kept me in shape. Had to make a quick three mile run when my other mode of transportation broke down this week and still was barely late to my next appointment, thanks to y’all. Thanks Oakery PAX and thanks F3!
