Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us, by Seth Godin  —  Book Description

A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It’s our nature.

Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they’re enabling countless new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming. And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can’t provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals—people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.

If you think leadership is for other people, think again—leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead.

    FROM F3:

Leadership is Influencing Movement to Advantage. To do that Effectively, a man must Competently apply the 4 Leadership Skills of V.A.P.E.:

    1. He must have Vision
    2. He must be capable of Articulation
    3. He must possess the means of Persuasion
    4. He is ready to use Exhortation

“The Mission of F3 is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership”

    Prayer for today

    Dear Heavenly Father,

It’s a new year, new possibilities. I pray today that we find our strength not from within us but from the gifts you’ve blessed us with. Lord draw discipline, devotion, and dedication to continue the lifelong evolution of becoming better men. Help us to fight the fartsack and join our brothers in the gloom as often as possible. Help us to see goals that push and moves us further in this journey. Inspire us to reach out to our community to make this world better in your name.

We lift this up to you today in your Son’s name,

    AMEN

8 Realizations from Real New Year’s Resolutions, from Kyle Creek, aka The Captain:

    1. Time doesn’t wait.
    2. No one else will save you.
    3. Excellence requires patience.
    4. Happiness is habitual.
    5. Life and growth are not linear.
    6. Thoughts are things.
    7. Days determine direction.
    8. Even with a plan — shit happens.

    MOLESKIN:

Good mumble chatter throughout with Red Curry & YHC.
Appreciation for Red Curry’s continued consistency.

Instead of resolutions, look towards being a happier person. Measure what you can so that you can look back & recognize improvements, but surely prioritize the doing better & feeling better aspects.

Something to consider during this season

While different life stages usually come with new friends, that doesn’t mean you have to leave your beloved old friends behind. There are many ways to continue this life journey side-by-side.

Recently a well know celebrity, tWitch took his life. On the surface he appeared like the Hollywood dream, caught his break, made it into a career, a beautiful loving family, and the world clamoring. An yet, it wasn’t enough to keep him here with us. Today I offer up a couple of ways and approaches to consider your relationships, especially in this season:

    • Invite them into new activities (F3)
    • Stay current and interested in their lives
    • Set aside negative emotions
    • Hold a place for them in your life

We discussed the loss the PAX has suffered over the last few weeks. I’m really proud of this group for stepping up and helping. That is really what F3 is about: having enough extra energy and strength not only to deal with your own life, but to reach out and to help others. That is also how I look at F3 leadership in general. It is not a “Lord it over” others type of leadership, but a service type of leadership. It is a leadership that lets you take on the burdens of others in addition to your own.

I’ve thought a lot about leadership in my own life (especially at work). I’ve boiled it down to two things:

    1. When times are good, are you able to take the spotlight off yourself and shine it on others?
    2. When times are bad, are you able to take the shots/responsibility and shield others from blame?

    “Recognizing critical self-talk”

I’ve been commuting into work regularly over the last few weeks and noticed that it’s a chance to recognize my state of mind. If I’m overly frustrated with other drivers, that’s a signal my state of mind is skewing negative. And I’ve had some of those drives recently. Noticing a lot of negative self-talk recently. I can often beat myself up for not living up to my expectations, largely with family stuff lately. My goal is to notice what’s going on and be compassionate with myself – stay with the uncomfortable.
